The Unknown Gulag: The Lost World of Stalin’s Special Settlements by Lynne Viola, History Professor at University of Toronto, will be discussed during a 5-day blog at OUP

The results of some truly chilling research have been published in a book called The Unknown Gulag, published by Oxford University Press. Lynne Viola, the author, has explored archives that shed light on the lives and fates of some of Stalin's earliest targets for elimination- the kulaks. Decades of poring through documents to find information about these peasant-prisoners of labor camps has revealed secrets about Soviet gulags that were previously only suspected by historians and scholars.

For insight into the makings of this book - and what Lynne Viola discovered through her research - follow the blog at Oxford University Press from May 21 to May 25. Comments are enabled, so you can take part in discussion about gulag history and the book.
