Secret files, connecting Romanian president Basescu with the Romanian Secret Police - or Securitate - will be reviewed prior to Romania's entry into the European Union. The Securitate, highly active during Nikolai Ceausescu's dictatorship, was so pervasive during Romania's communist years, still maintains influence, whether merely as a part of the collective memory or as real political motivators. Romania must now decide whether it is best to let the memory fade or publish files that could implicate former Securitate members and open old wounds. While Besescu has denied collaboration with the Securitate, the files might just reveal how much Romania is still under the shadow of the secret police.
