Human Rights in Former USSR

Human rights is still an issue in former Soviet Republics like Russia and Belarus.

Sure, a lot has changed since the Soviet system collapsed under its insipid, grandiose design. But - and there always seems to be a "but" when we praise the progress made by the former USSR - the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF) has warned that Soviet-style human rights violations still occur. This is hardly suprising, as former Soviet countries seek to build their economies and re-assert their identities ,and Western nations struggle with their own human rights violations.

Belarus, effectively stuck in a Communist-era time capsule, is on the IHF's list. Russia's abuse of Chechnya has also been called out, and not for the first time. Thrown into IHF's mix is the West's facilitation of the use of torture.
