These museums in the United States offer visitors a look at the culture and heritage of Eastern Europeans living both in the U.S. and abroad.

If you find yourself in D.C., New York, New Jersey, or Chicago, you may want to schedule in an afternoon at one of the following museums. These museums seek to educate visitors about the culture and heritage of Eastern European experiences, both past and present. Many museums have the support of local ethnic populations and also serve as resources for researchers.

Polish Museum of America

The Polish Museum of America, located in Chicago, Illinois, is dedicated to the preservation of Polish and Polish-American heritage and culture. It is a resource for researchers as well as a tool for public education about Polish folk culture, important Polish individuals, Polish art, and Polish history. The Polish Museum of America is also involved in genealogical research. The Polish Museum of America Library is not open to the public, as most of the materials there are not catalogued. Unfortunately, the museum's website is rather difficult to navigate and somewhat incomplete, which may be a symptom of the institution maintaining a minimal staff. If you're truly interested in visiting or conducting research at the Polish Museum of America, it may be best to call and talk to an individual who can answer your specific questions and give you up-to-date information.

The Ukrainian Museum in New York

The Ukrainian Museum is dedicated to the historical and contemporary Ukrainian experience. The museum's focus includes Ukrainian folk art, Cossack history, Ukrainian cartographic history, 20th century Ukrainian history, and Ukrainian paintings and sculpture. Ukrainian folk dress and fine art make up the museum's permanent collections. This museum is a celebration of rich Ukrainian cultural heritage passed down through generations.

American Hungarian Museum in New Jersey

This community museum has a permanent collection featuring Hungarian folk costumes, photographs, and historical artifacts. Because the museum strongly promotes the Hungarian heritage of the local population, some pieces on display may be of handmade origin from individuals of the community.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum seeks to raise awareness about the Holocaust and and disseminate information about its course of development and its consequences, both in remembrance of those who suffered as well as to discourage future acts of genocide. The museum website gives comprehensive information about what services the museum offers in addition to resources for those in need of more information about Holocaust survivors, Holocaust history, Holocaust statistics, and Holocaust studies in general. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is located in Washington, DC.
